While in Modern Basque a systematic “residual” V2 system in wh-interrogatives has emerged, in Archaic Basque only synthetic verbs display systematic V2 order, whereas analytic verbs allow intervening material between the wh-phrase and the verbal complex. We put forth a multifactorial analysis of Archaic Basque where independent syntactic or morphophonological properties of auxiliaries interact with the syntax of V2 in such a way that they ‘hide’ its effects on word order in interrogatives with analytic verbs. The change from Archaic to Modern Basque involves a mere change in the properties of T, independently from the syntax of V2.</dc:description><dc:identifier>https://hal.science/hal-05546517</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>https://univ-pau.hal.science/hal-05546517v1/file/Manuscript%20%281%29.pdf</dc:identifier><dc:format>Article de journal | Aldizkari bateko artikulua</dc:format><dc:relation>vignette : https://www.bilketa.eus/in/rest/Thumb/image?id=ark:/27020/Artxiker-hal05546517&amp;mat=articleNum</dc:relation><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:rights>https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Archive ouverte HAL | HAL artxibo irekia</dc:rights><dc:subject>V2 grammars</dc:subject><dc:subject>word-order variation</dc:subject><dc:subject>Euskara (hizkuntza)</dc:subject><dc:subject>Langue basque</dc:subject><dc:subject>syntax-pf interface</dc:subject><dc:subject>theory of change</dc:subject><dc:subject>Humanitateak eta zientzia sozialak</dc:subject><dc:subject>Humanités et sciences sociales</dc:subject><dc:title>Basque V2 effects in diachrony</dc:title></oai_dc:dc></metadata></record></GetRecord></OAI-PMH>
